DAYIKA IN A MAZE

My Story

I’m Dayika Naidoo, a 15-year-old, Gr 10 student. I am the youngest of triplets and was born prematurely at 28 weeks, weighing only 780g. Three months of my life were spent in the Neonatal ICU.I came into this world with both my hips and my left knee dislocated, which led to numerous surgeries to help me walk.

My journey has been quite a challenging one, both physically and mentally. But, with the strength, perseverance, and determination within me, I’ve managed to conquer the many obstacles I’ve faced and continue to face, simply by embracing my differences. There is nothing that I want to change about myself, nor should you!

I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety since the age of 10. My dream has always been to remove the stigma surrounding mental illness and to provide support for others who face challenges, whether physical or mental, so they can find the courage to feel good about themselves.
My passions lie in writing and coding.

I’ve completed a three-year coding and app design qualification from TekkieUni. Additionally, I’m proud to say that I’m a published author, with one of my short stories selected for publication in the book ‘Africa, where the magic is.

Mental Health Struggles

Knowing I was different, it resulted in the start of my depression and anxiety just at the age of 10. My journey has not been an easy one, and as I still continue to face these challenges, I am choosing to speak up to break the stigma around mental health.

Childhood (Surgeries, being different)

My first three months of life were spent in the Neonatal ICU. I was born with dislocated hips and my left knee, which necessitated several surgeries to enable me to walk. I knew I was different from others, but I embraced by uniqueness.

The Upward Turn (Asking for help)

Seeking help is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of strength, and shows that you are willing to make a positive change in your life and set an example for others. When I decided to seek help, doors of opportunities opened for me, where I am now able to help others.

Teen Years (High functioning / ASD)

During my teen years, I was diagnosed with high functioning ASD, this again was a contributing factor to my mental health. However, being aware of my purpose, and with strong determination, I overcome my challenges and stride on fearlessly

Mission (Where we headed)

My mission is to eradicate the stigma surrounding mental illness and offer support to those facing challenges, whether they are physical or mental. I want to empower them to discover their inner strength and show them how to embrace a positive self-image and well-being. So, let’s join hands and help each other grow!
